If you have a bathtub that needs paint repairs and refinishing, you’ve come to the right place. Bathrooms are high moisture places and eventually, the fittings get affected by the constant wetness and begin to wear out.
When the coating begins to chip off in a bathtub, the exposed area will begin to rust and eventually crack. To arrest this problem, a refinishing job is necessary. Fortunately, there are several products in the market that will make this a simple and relatively cheap process.
The Rust-Oleum Tub and Tile Refinishing Kit Review will highlight three Rust-Oleum bathtub products that you can use to paint your tub. All three products are of high quality and are designed specifically to repair and paint your tub.

Rust-Oleum 7860519 Tub And Tile Refinishing Kit is a protective coating that you can apply on a bathtub to repair blemishes or to just give it a fresh look.
Peeled off paint and scrapes can make your tub rust and will eventually begin to crack. The finishing kit applies a new layer of epoxy that seals the scrapes to make the surface smooth again.
The kit finishes the bathtub with a porcelain look and provides wear and scratch resistance to give it more life. It applies to ceramic tiles, porcelain, fiberglass, acrylic, cast iron, and steel tubs and sinks.
The kit comes in two parts that are mixed together and applied with a high-density short nap roller or sprayer. The epoxy dries to a durable, corrosion-resistant layer that is shiny and washable.
One kit applies 2 coats to 110 square feet or a standard bathtub and takes 3 days to properly cure and expose to water.
- 2 part epoxy acrylic resin
- Applies 2 coats on a standard bathtub
- 3-Days curing period
- Ideal for most tub and sink materials
- Washable with superior adhesion in water
- Self-leveling to reduce brush marks
- High gloss finish like porcelain
- Durable and scratch-resistant
- Bubbles and peels off easily if not well applied
The product application is an easy process. Surface preparation involves removing metal drains and hardware, and loose paint and rust, mildew, and caulk. Prepare surface with an abrasive pad and sandpaper the rinse away any residue. Be careful to use the recommended cleaning agents to prevent kit from peeling off later.
When applying the product, ensure that the bathroom is well ventilated and that you wear a mask. The product has a strong chemical smell that can affect you.
Mix both parts of the kit and thin no more than 10% of the product with isopropyl alcohol, acetone or xylene. Use a high-quality short nap kitchen and bath roller or brush that will not dissolve and leave debris on the wet epoxy.
Apply two coats and wait at least 1 hour of drying time between coats. As the paint dries, small bubbles will appear on the surface. This should not be a concern because the epoxy will level itself and create a smooth surface. Allow a 3-day curing period before exposing the tub to water.

Rustoleum 280882 Speciality Tub and Tile Spray Paint is very much like the refinishing kit only that you spray it. It is an acrylic epoxy spray paint that will produce a smooth, porcelain-like finish in minutes. It provides excellent adhesion and durability to tiles, sinks, and tubs.
The paint is waterproof and highly resistant to scratches. It will still retain the pure white color against continuous bathtub use. The paint comes in a 12oz/340g aerosol can which covers up to 15 square feet. To apply the recommended 2 or 3 light coats, you’ll require 5-7 cans to cover a standard bathtub.
- 12oz aerosol can
- 5-7 cans to apply 2-3 coats on a standard bathtub
- 3-Days curing period
- Withstands extreme hot temperature
- Excellent color retention
- Leaves a smooth, glossy, waterproof finish
- Spraying leaves a better finish than brush strokes.
- Costs almost three times as much as the refinishing kit
- Can only be used on ceramic and porcelain
Product preparation is similar to the refinishing kit. Proper surface preparation and cleaning is important to achieving a smooth, durable finish as is carefully following the application instructions. Avoid using muriatic/ hydrochloric acid to clean the tub before spraying as the acid may react with the paint.
Instead, you can use standard household cleaners such as Lime-A-Way that will create a porous surface to enable adhesion of the paint.
Use painter’s tape to mask areas you don’t want to paint and properly ventilate the bathroom by opening windows or using fans. You can also use a face mask to prevent inhaling the paint.
Shake the can often during the application and always hold the spray 10-16″ from the surface. The paint takes 3 days to cure completely after which you can enjoy your renewed bathtub. This paint is only available in white.

Rustoleum 244166 Speciality Kit Tub and Tile Touch-Up quickly repairs scrapes, chips, dents, and defects on porcelain and ceramic surfaces. It is washable and moisture resistant suitable for application on tubs, sinks, tiles, and toilets. Apart from ceramic and porcelain, the product can be applied to fiberglass, acrylic, cast iron, and steel surfaces.
This product is a durable epoxy acrylic paint that comes in two parts and provides a high gloss finish that makes the surfaces look new and glossy. It is a brilliant white touch up paint that will most likely not color match with the existing color. You’ll be left with a visible patch where you touched up.
This paint does not have a long preparation procedure like the refinishing kit and specialty paint above. It also doesn’t smell as much although it takes just as much time to dry and cure. The paint works by mixing the two parts to create a light viscous solution that adheres well to the surface.
- 2-Part epoxy and acrylic paint
- Wide application to a variety of surfaces
- Repairs scratches, nicks and defects
- Provides a glossy, porcelain-like finish
- Available in brilliant white only
- Covers rust and scratches very well
- Easy to use
- Weak chemical smell
- Has excellent coverage and is self-leveling
- Leaves visible patches as it doesn’t color match
- Has a runny, light consistency
Surface preparation is easy. It requires sanding with sandpaper or a wire brush and washing away with soap and water. Rinse with fresh water and allow it to properly dry before you begin the application.
One pack of this paint covers up to 1.25 square feet which will cover most nicks and dents. The light viscosity of the liquid may not be adequate to cover deep gouges that require a few coats. To treat rusty tubs, I recommend using a rust primer to prevent rust from spreading through the paint.
Allow 10 minutes between coats and allow 3 days for it to cure completely. It may require more time to cure if you paint more than 2-coats. If you follow the preparation and application process correctly, the result is a durable, high gloss finish.

About Rust-Oleum: Rust Never Sleeps
Rust-Oleum was founded on the principle of providing innovative paints and coatings that protect surfaces from the elements. Rust-Oleum was founded by Robert Fergusson, a Scottish sea captain, who discovered that an accidental spill of fish oil on his metal deck had significantly stopped the spread of rust.
He immediately recognized the potential of his discovery and went on to develop a fish-oil based primer formulation that could dry overnight and was without unpleasant odor.
In 1932, Captain Fergusson moved to Chicago and founded Rust-Oleum Paint Company, a company driven by innovation and passion to develop rust preventive paint and coatings. Rust-Oleum products now use resins derived from alkyds, polyurethanes, and epoxies instead of fish oil.
The company remained family-owned until 1994 when it was acquired by RPM International Inc. It currently has offices and factories in 10 countries worldwide with over 1000 employees.
In 1921, Captain Fergusson produced the company’s first product, The Wonder Product 769. Since then, the company has produced and acquired 37 brands under its umbrella.
The Rust-Oleum products are designed to save time and money by providing easy to use, durable products while providing the highest quality protection against rust and the elements. As a multinational chemical company, their products are focused on creating value in the most environmentally responsible manner.
Rust-Oleum has an extensive dealer network that provides free technical support by phone or email should you require it. They also have specially trained staff that will offer free on-site specification and application advice and product training.
